Amentum supports research at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), including fiber-optic sensors for acoustic, seismic, electric, and magnetic fields; sensors for structural strain and damage; and sensors for chemical, biological, and explosive materials. The work also includes research and development for novel multicomponent polymers with optical, electronic, and mechanical applications, and materials with superior thermal, mechanical, and optical properties. Amentum has supported the NRL Optics Division since 1977. The Optical Engineer conducts research on radiation dosimetry, undersea sensing, and related sensing techniques, and supports applied research programs to develop radiation-hardened sensors and undersea sensing techniques. The role contributes to technical reports and scientific publications. The work schedule is 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., 40 hours per week. The work environment includes lab research, field testing, and desk work. A Secret security clearance is required, but candidates may begin in an uncleared capacity while clearance processing proceeds. The position requires an MSc or PhD in Optics or Physics and experience with instrumentation, interfacing, software development, lab experimentation, and circuit design. Knowledge of MATLAB is beneficial.
