The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical engineer to support laser operations through data-driven analysis, technical evaluation, and hands-on operation and testing. This role is ideal for a candidate with a strong optical background who enjoys problem-solving, working with technical equipment, and collaborating across engineering teams. The successful candidate must be willing to work shift assignments 1–2 times per week, including evening hours, to support operational needs and testing schedules.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics and 3 years of relevant optics or laser experience required
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with lasers, preferably laser diodes required
  • Experience with automated alignment processes, like pick-and-place robotic equipment, preferably for optical or semiconductor components required
  • A strong foundation in mathematics and physics as well as an inquisitive and analytical mind.
  • Ability to develop data collection and database interface and integration into manufacturing execution system.
  • Ability to develop optical alignment tooling and procedures.
  • Track record of project work on optical systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Hands-on experience using oscilloscopes and electronic test equipment
  • Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, Excel, or similar platforms)
  • Prior experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Adaptability to shifting priorities and schedules

Nice To Haves

  • High level of competency with modelling of optical systems. (Zemax highly preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Complete qualification and stand watch in operation in the Omega laser system
  • Perform engineering analysis to support laser development, system performance evaluation, operational activities and ensure system safety
  • Collect, process, and interpret technical data to identify trends, anomalies, and performance improvements
  • Conduct laboratory and field-testing using equipment such as oscilloscopes and other diagnostic tools
  • Support validation and verification activities through structured test planning and documentation
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and test plans to provide clear direction for technicians and operators
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including scientists, engineers, and technicians
