This is a 12-month (September 2026 - August 2027) or 16-month (preferred, September 2026 - December 2027) co-op/intern position located in Ottawa, ON, with an onsite work environment. The pay range is $24-35/hr. The role involves developing and enhancing optical design and simulation tools, characterizing and testing fiber optics, assembling and aligning optical modules, designing and building optical test setups, and running optical simulations of diffractive optical elements (DOEs) and metasurfaces.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.
  • Currently in your 3rd year of an Engineering program (e.g., Electrical, Physics, Photonics, or related field).
  • Working knowledge of Gaussian beam theory, polarization, and optics fundamentals.
  • Basic laboratory experience, with a strong willingness to learn new techniques and methodologies.
  • Strong interest in optics, photonics, and advanced technologies.
  • Eager to learn, detail-oriented, and able to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Eligible to complete a background check as part of the hiring process.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior exposure to optical systems, simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, Lumerical), or photonics-related projects is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance optical design and simulation tools to support ongoing research and engineering projects.
  • Characterize and test fiber optics, measuring performance metrics and analyzing results to ensure product quality and reliability.
  • Assemble and align optical modules with precision, gaining valuable lab and prototyping experience.
  • Design and build optical test setups, applying both creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • Run optical simulations of diffractive optical elements (DOEs) and metasurfaces to explore next-generation technologies.
