Optical Design and Innovation Co-op

LumentumOttawa, ON

About The Position

At Lumentum, we’re building the tech behind the world’s fastest networks and most advanced systems. Our optical and photonic solutions power everything from AI and cloud computing to data centers, telecom, and advanced manufacturing. We’re a global team of innovators working where light meets technology, solving big challenges that keep the world connected and moving forward. This role involves working with expert optical designers, contributing to industry-leading WSS (Wavelength Selective Switch) and OCS (Optical Circuit Switch) products, widely used in fiber optic transmission networks and AI datacenters. The co-op will be involved in lab testing of a new MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) mirror array and creating an automated macro to convert Zemax OpticStudio design files from Sequential Mode to Non-Sequential Mode. The built-in tools for this conversion produce many errors for complex 3D optical designs, so a skilled programmer with good 3D spatial analysis capabilities is needed to implement a robust method. Other tasks related to Optical Design may also arise.

Requirements

  • Applicants should be in a degree program in Physics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Computer programming experience, either in course work or extra-curricular activities.
  • Ability to write and debug complex computer programs.
  • Ability to understand and use sensitive lab equipment.
  • Ability to learn new concepts, communicate results, and generate new ideas.
  • Candidates must be eligible to complete a background check as part of the hiring process.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one completed course in Optics would be an asset.
  • Experience using optical ray-tracing software such as Zemax OpticStudio would be an asset.

Responsibilities
