About The Position

An Optical Associate I is a trained eyewear specialist responsible for interpreting prescriptions, assisting patients in selecting frames, lenses, contacts, taking precise measurements, and ensuring that eyewear fits correctly. Optical Associates bridge clinical eye care and retail service, providing both technical expertise and patient-centered support. An optical associate should possess strong sales skills by demonstrating a high level of knowledge about our products and be able to recommend accessories or enhancements to the patient based on their prescription and lifestyle needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Minimum 2 year eyecare experience required
  • Minimum Associates or equivalent and on-the-job training or post-secondary education
  • Ability to demonstrate eye–hand coordination, manual/finger dexterity, agility, and color vision and depth perception with visual acuity correctable to 20/25 while fitting eyeglasses and contacts
  • Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office & familiarity with EHR's; especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and a minimum typing speed of 30 AW PM
  • Team player that develops strong collaborative working relationships with internal partners and can effectively engage and to build consensus among cross-functional teams

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years of prior retail sales in optical or work in the healthcare industry
  • ABO/NCLE Certification or the ability to become certified within 90 days of employment
  • 4-year degree or advanced coursework and certifications

Responsibilities

  • Greets customers and assists with selecting frames based on prescription needs, fit, comfort, lifestyle, and style preferences.
  • Reads and interprets prescriptions from optometrists and ophthalmologists.
  • Educates patients on lens materials, coatings, technologies, warranties, pricing, insurance benefits, and expected adaptation periods, particularly for progressive and specialty lenses.
  • Takes precise optical measurements, including pupillary distance (PD), segment height, multifocal alignment, bridge, and temple measurements.
  • Ensures eyewear fits properly by performing frame adjustments for comfort, balance, and optimal optical alignment.
  • Enters eyewear and lens orders accurately into optical software and prepares orders for processing.
  • Submits and tracks eyewear orders with in-house or external laboratory partners.
  • Inspects completed eyewear for prescription accuracy, lens quality, and overall workmanship before dispensing.
  • Performs minor eyewear repairs and adjustments, including replacing screws, nose pads, and temples.
  • Instructs patients on the proper care, cleaning, maintenance, and handling of their eyewear.
  • Maintains accurate patient records, order documentation, and related optical records.
  • Communicates order delays, remakes, backorders, and other issues to patients, laboratories, and team members as appropriate.
  • Assists with inventory management, including organizing frames, lenses, parts, and optical supplies.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and professional optical dispensary.
  • Provides exceptional customer service while building patient confidence and satisfaction throughout the dispensing process.
  • Assists with merchandising, frame displays, and product presentation to maintain an attractive retail environment.
  • Collaborates with providers and team members to ensure accurate, timely, and efficient patient care.
  • Complies with all company policies, HIPAA requirements, safety standards, and applicable regulatory guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
