About The Position

This is a temporary "pool" announcement for an OPS Registered Nurse position with the Department of Health, providing basic nursing services to students under the supervision of the Community Health Nursing Supervisor. The role involves administering first aid and medications, organizing health screenings, maintaining health unit cleanliness, and accurate record-keeping. The position also requires assisting with health screenings, data entry, and communication with parents/guardians. The nurse will attend in-services, complete training, and submit documentation in a timely manner. Emergency duty may be required, including working in shelters or responding to disasters. Access to records containing social security numbers will be necessary.

Requirements

  • Utilization of equipment: Computer (email, attachments), print, fax and telephone skills and data entry knowledge.
  • Ability to keep accurate records; ability to document utilizing electronic records.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others through speech and writing.
  • Ability to work with children and adolescents.
  • Able to respond to emergency situations (running) and lift up to 10-20 lbs (emergency equipment).
  • Ability to climb stairs (in the case of 2-story school or elevators are out).
  • Ability to acquire CPR certification and physically able to perform CPR correctly.
  • Ability to assist a student into and out of a wheelchair and be able to push and maneuver wheelchair over uneven surfaces for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to bend to retrieve documents from file cabinet or items under cabinet.
  • Florida RN license.
  • Must be able to acquire CPR and First Aid prior to on-boarding.
  • Experience working in a medical setting.
  • Must possess a current, valid Driver’s license.
  • Must have transportation in order to travel to Brevard Public Schools in Brevard County, FL.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • All Florida Department of Health positions require the incumbent to be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic nursing services as allowed by RN scope of practice to students under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the Community Health Nursing Supervisor.
  • Administer first aid, daily medications, and emergency medications to students and/or staff as requested and ordered by a physician, following Brevard County Health Department and Brevard Public Schools guidelines.
  • Perform procedures such as intermittent clean catheterization, gastrostomy tube feeding, and monitoring blood glucose.
  • Organize and assist with state-mandated health screenings (hearing/vision, scoliosis, body mass index).
  • Maintain a clean health unit/work area and perform periodic inventory of medical supplies.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records/documentation of all work performed.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with all staff members.
  • Assist the health screening team with implementing/scheduling health screenings for school district students in State mandated grade levels, including body mass index, hearing and vision.
  • Collect and input screening data into HMS for upload by the School Health Program in Tallahassee.
  • Sort and prepare mailings to parents/guardians regarding screening results, including first and second notification letters and third notification via phone contact.
  • Attend School Health in-services, complete mandated training, and accurately submit timesheets, mileage, and Daily Reports in a timely fashion.
  • Perform related work as required.
  • May be required to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency, including working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties.
  • Incumbent will have access to records containing social security numbers in the performance of job duties.
