About The Position

This position is located in Tallahassee, FL at Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park. The OPS Park Services Specialist works with the Park Management and Citizen Support Organization (Friends of Maclay Gardens) to plan and coordinate special events, workshops and retreats. The specialist coordinates the outsourcing of services for special events, including the setup of stages, tents, sound and lighting, and ensures all required paperwork is collected and submitted on time. This role also books weddings, pavilions, and special permit activities, and maintains the park’s master calendar. The position coordinates park-wide events featuring interpretive events, tours, media events, and volunteer workdays. It also implements the park's communications plan, which includes creating content for the park website, newsletters, social media, graphics, presentations, magazine articles, press releases, and public service announcements. This involves building relationships with reporters, conducting interviews, and creating printed materials for diverse audiences. The position works closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to organize volunteer recruitment and monitor volunteer needs for park programs and events, assists in coordinating the docent program for the Maclay House and Visitor Center, and works in the development and coordination of park information materials. Additionally, this role may work in the Ranger Station and Visitor Center greeting visitors, providing customer service, information about the park, park rules, and directions. It involves collecting fees, operating a point-of-sale cash register, accurately collecting, recording, and reconciling revenue, maintaining an organized workspace, answering phones, operating radio equipment, and completing and reconciling receipts and reports. The position ensures park rules are enforced for all natural, historical, and archaeological facilities and resources and performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the Florida Park Service mission.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of effective verbal and written communications.
  • Knowledge of administrative principles and practices.
  • Skills in use of office equipment including personal computers and software (Windows, Word, Excel, Adobe, Outlook e-mail, internet).
  • Skills in handling money and balancing receipts.
  • Skills in preparing reports and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to plan and oversee all special event activities in the park, which include booking weddings, pavilion rentals, special programs and workshops.
  • Ability to supervise and lead personnel in the set up and tear down of events.
  • Ability to work with management to determine work priorities, assign work related to events and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain event schedules and reporting.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and oversee special events and park programs.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to utilize problem solving techniques.
  • Ability to disseminate public information and media announcements and cultivate positive media relations and community outreach.
  • Ability to provide effective public speaking in public formats and interpret the park’s mission.

  • Ability to take and pass CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Maintain valid Driver’s License.
  • Successfully complete a background and fingerprint check.

Responsibilities
