About The Position

This position is located in Coconut Grove, Florida at The Barnacle Historic State Park. The role involves visitor services, maintenance, resource management, administration, and protection. The park is a historic house museum built in 1891, offering a glimpse into frontier life and the history of the Coconut Grove community. The position is scheduled up to 29 hours per week and requires the ability to work rotating shifts, including weekdays, weekends, and some evenings and holidays. This is an OPS (Other Personnel Services) position, which does not include leave or health benefits.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate lawn mowers, weed trimmers, drills, and basic hand tools.
  • Ability to perform tours of the house and grounds.
  • Basic arithmetic.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to interact with visitors and co-workers in a tactful, efficient and courteous manner.
  • Ability to take initiative and complete tasks without being prompted.
  • Ability to handle money and make change.
  • Ability to provide educational interpretive programs for the public.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports.
  • Ability to perform outdoor physical work.
  • Ability to work in a small office with frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to understand and apply rules, directives, policies, laws and regulations.
  • Ability to operate office equipment, computer and cash register.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools and landscaping equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Engages with the public in a friendly and diplomatic fashion with the primary goal of ensuring positive visitor experiences and repeat visits.
  • Receives visitors and collects fees in the park office/gift shop.
  • Conducts daily educational tours and programs.
  • Assists with public and private special events.
  • Performs a variety of custodial duties including regular cleaning, maintenance and small repairs of buildings, facilities, vehicles and equipment.
  • Responsible for routine groundskeeping tasks including mowing, trimming, weeding, leaf blowing and picking up trash.
  • Cleans, maintains, and protects historic buildings and a large collection of artifacts.
  • Recognizes a variety of native and exotic species and removes invasive exotic species.
  • Uses computer and cash register.
  • Balances cash receipts.
  • Completes numerous forms, logs and reports.
  • Answers phone, correspondence and email.
  • Follows safety guidelines and wears appropriate PPE.
  • Implements the park’s Emergency Action Plan.
  • Assists in all aspects of storm preparation and recovery.
  • Understands and follows park rules and seeks compliance from visitors.
