About The Position

This position is with the Florida Department of Health in Gadsden County. The OPS Environmental Specialist II will conduct various inspections to ensure compliance with safety and sanitation standards, investigate environmental and sanitary nuisance complaints, and assist with enforcement actions. The role also involves participation in training and other related duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  • Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, often to detect problems or to find out when things are finished.
  • Identifying the nature of problems.
  • Ability to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of group care facilities, private and public schools, and perform food hygiene inspections as required.
  • Inspect adult day care facilities, detention centers, tanning facilities, and regulated bars to ensure compliance with safety and sanitation standards.
  • Investigate sanitary nuisance complaints related to these programs.
  • Inspect limited-use public water systems, swimming pools, and biomedical waste generators to verify compliance with applicable state rules and regulations.
  • Investigate any associated sanitary nuisance concerns.
  • Conduct investigation of environmental and sanitary nuisance complaints.
  • Initiate legal notices when appropriate and prepare documentation for court proceedings as required.
  • Provide testimony regarding violations of statutes related to sanitary nuisance and potential public health hazards.
  • Assist with all aspects of the Rabies Surveillance Program, including bite reports, home confinement procedures, and support for the Epidemiology Nurse.
  • Under the supervision of the Environmental Manager and Legal District Counsel, carry out enforcement actions when necessary to mitigate conditions that may contribute to the spread of disease or pose risks to the community.
  • Participate in training activities designed to maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills, as assigned.
  • Assist with other related duties as needed.
