About The Position

This is a part-time Other Personnel Service (OPS) Environmental Specialist I position working with the Department of Health in Lee County. This $19.23-$20.19 per hour, 24 hours minimum per week, part-time Environmental Specialist position performs duties under the direction of the Environmental Manager with the Environmental Health and Engineering Section of the Florida Department of Health in Lee County. The primary focus areas for the incumbent will start with training to perform quality assurance inspections and enforcement in the following areas: Public Swimming Pool Inspections, Public Drinking Water Systems Sample Collection, and Mobile Home/RV Parks. Additional training and experience may follow, in programs such as Biomedical Waste, Sanitary Complaints Investigation, Annual assessments of Aerobic Treatment Units (Advanced Septic Systems), Verification of Septic System Abandonments, Body Art/Body Piercing & Tattooing, Group Care, Migrant Farmworker Housing, Tanning, Food Hygiene, Sanitary Complaints and Legal Enforcement, Onsite Treatment and Disposal Systems, Limited Use Drinking Water Systems, Non-Community Drinking Water Systems, Well Surveillance (SuperACT), Healthy Beaches program, and Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring and Tracking. These inspections protect public health by regulating and enforcing best practices, which in turn reduces the public’s exposure to disease and injury.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have a vehicle to perform duties.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge and skill in using field equipment required, including but not limited to operating a laser level, shovel, auger, Munsell Color Charts, drill, and other equipment as deemed necessary to perform environmental health inspections.
  • Knowledge of terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.
  • Knowledge of and basic computer skills.
  • Knowledge of correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar usage.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment.
  • Ability to follow office procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to handle telephone calls in a courteous, and effective manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, and in writing.
  • Ability to establish, and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies & procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize individual workload.
  • Ability to frequently bend, kneel, reach, and sit or stand for long periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Perform quality assurance inspections and enforcement in areas such as Public Swimming Pool Inspections, Public Drinking Water Systems Sample Collection, and Mobile Home/RV Parks.
  • Conduct inspections to protect public health by regulating and enforcing best practices.
  • Maintain and operate a county vehicle per state and county regulations.
  • Perform emergency duty before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days, if required.
