About The Position

This is an intermediate level position performing a narrow range of assignments under general supervision. The primary responsibilities of this position are to ensure the delivery of quality dental services to clients of the Leon County Health Department's pediatric dental clinic. This includes but is not limited to actual treatment performed on patients, assurance of confidentiality, monitoring sterilization procedures, development of community dental programs to assist in screening high risk individuals and periodic training programs as needed. This position will primarily work in Leon County Schools as part of SMILE United program. When not assigned to school-based duties, responsibilities will be performed at the Molar Express with the Florida Department of Health in Leon County dental clinic.

Requirements

• Knowledge of principles and practices is used to perform dental procedures.
• Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively and to maintain effective working relationships.
• Licensure as a Dental Hygienist in accordance with Chapter 466, Florida Statutes.
• Ability to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.
• Must be registered with the Selective Services System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS (for male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962).

Responsibilities

• Participates in the School Based Sealant Program, Early Head Start, Head Start, Early Learning Coalition programs, and any other community programs.
• Responsible for setting up portable dental equipment; can lift up to 50 pounds.
• Responsible for all dental-related compliance tasks, including waterline testing, routine spore testing, and maintaining all biohazard logs.
• Removes calculus deposits, accretions and stains from exposed surfaces of the teeth and from the tooth surfaces within the gingival sulcus.
• Performs gingival curettage and root planning as needed.
• Polishes clinical crowns.
• Instruct patients in oral hygiene care and supervise patient oral hygiene care, charts suspected findings of the oral cavity and records procedures performed in electronic dental record, medical history and next visit.
• Apply dental sealants and topical fluorides.
• Places and exposes digital radiographs.
• Performs remediable tasks as delegated in the Dental Practice Act.
• Enters procedures and billing into Health Management System within 5 calendar days of service.
• Enter patient information into HMS and Eaglesoft as needed.
• Follows up with dental patient referrals.
• Sterilization, disinfecting, cleaning and maintenance of instruments, equipment and operatories as appropriate according to state, federal and ADA guidelines.
• Maintaining inventory of consumable supplies and ordering within an adequate timeframe to ensure that no materials are ever totally depleted.
• Participate in in-service and staff development programs related to job performance.
• Attend staff meetings and other related in-services to keep current pertinent rules, regulations and procedures.
• Perform other related duties as required by the supervisor.
