About The Position

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) through the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) administers the Compensation & Pension (C&P) Program for benefits to Veterans, Service Members, their dependents, and their survivors. On October 9, 1996, Congress enacted Public Law 104-275 which authorized VA to contract for medical examinations (a critical piece of evidence for determining the extent of permanent impairment) from non-VA medical sources. This Project is established in support of the VA effort to provide disability examination services. The Ophthalmologist will provide specialized ophthalmic expertise within the multi-disciplinary team with the primary role of, evaluating patients for ocular conditions that may be attributable to military service. The Ophthalmologist must be able to properly evaluate conditions and clearly provide written evaluation notes via required forms.

Requirements

  • Current and unrestricted license to practice in the US, US Territory or Canada.
  • American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) is required.
  • Medical Degree (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Board certified or board eligible in Ophthalmology.
  • Experience with adult patients.
  • Expert working knowledge of the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye.
  • Excellent IT skills including use of electronic medical records systems.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to cope with stressful situations.
  • Strong organizational communication, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Results oriented and able to meet project deliverables.
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness with the willingness to work with a foreign national patient population.
  • A valid US Passport or Passport from Country of Record.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized ophthalmic expertise within the multi-disciplinary team with the primary role of, evaluating patients for ocular conditions that may be attributable to military service.
  • Properly evaluate conditions and clearly provide written evaluation notes via required forms.
  • Provide Ophthalmology care examinations in accordance with established Disability Benefit Questionnaires provided through the VA.
  • Provide vision testing and evaluation of visual conditions.
  • Refer patients for more specialized evaluation if required for proper evaluation.
  • Diagnose ocular diseases and injuries.
  • Ensures that all medical records are correct and maintained.
  • Provision of clinical reporting into Project Medical Director.
  • Ensure best practice in line with clinical guidelines and SOPs.
  • Support the clinical excellence framework under direction from the Project Medical Director.
  • Completes required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.
  • Absolute familiarity with and compliance with company policies and such procedures that are pertinent to the role and to good clinical care, including but not limited to: Consent, confidentiality, and appropriate handling of healthcare records in adherence to HIPAA/patient confidentiality laws.
  • Maintaining and improving clinical quality through audit and quality improvement activity.
  • Understand their role in the organization’s clinical governance program.
