About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician performs a range of duties under the general supervision of the Chief Lead Technician. This includes preparing patients for physician examinations, maintaining examination rooms, performing vision screenings, administering eye medications, and assisting physicians with minor surgical and laser procedures. The role involves providing primary ophthalmic care, acting as a clinical assistant, and accurately recording patient information in the EMR system. Key responsibilities include conducting preliminary exams, various sub-specialty tests, slit lamp examinations, pupil dilation, and patient counseling regarding treatments and procedures. The technician is also responsible for equipment maintenance, managing patient communications, and ensuring exam rooms are properly stocked and maintained. Additionally, they prepare for minor surgical procedures and maintain a safe and healthy work environment according to departmental policies and legal regulations. The position requires flexibility to work at alternative VCUHS Ophthalmology locations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in optometric/ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Successfully completion of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Ophthalmic Medial Assisting Course within 12 months.
  • Obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO) within twenty-four (24) months of hire date.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
  • Previous experience in an academic health care environment.
  • Successful completion of Ophthalmic Assistant Program.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for physician examinations by conducting preliminary exams, recording medical history, and performing vision screenings.
  • Performs sub-specialty tests including refraction, VF test, A-Scan Biometry, Pachymetry, PAM evaluation, BAT, color testing, and contact lens evaluation.
  • Conducts slit lamp examinations, pupil evaluation, motility screening, visual acuity, refraction, and tonometry with applanation.
  • Prepares patients for examination by dilating pupils and communicating findings to the physician.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality by safeguarding medical records and completing diagnostic orders.
  • Counsels patients on physician's orders, including the use of drops, contact lenses, drugs, and answers questions about surgery and specialty imaging.
  • Keeps equipment operating by following instructions, troubleshooting, maintaining supplies, and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Handles patient phone calls, messages, MyChart messages, and prescription refill requests.
  • Performs a standard number of patient work-ups while maintaining quality customer service.
  • Opens and closes examination rooms, ensuring equipment is cleaned and stocked.
  • Maintains stock in exam rooms and treatment rooms.
  • Prepares instruments for sterilization or High-Level Disinfection (HLD).
  • Sets up and prepares for minor OR procedures, including setting sterile trays and maintaining the sterile field.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following policies and complying with legal regulations.
  • Follows attendance and dress code policies.
  • Willing to work at all office locations.
