About The Position

Milwaukee Eye Care Associates, S.C. is seeking a Full Time Ophthalmic Technician. We have four offices spanning the metro Milwaukee area and dedicate our focus on delivering excellent patient care. Candidate must be willing to travel to all 4 metro Milwaukee locations. The successful candidate will test and measure eye function to assist the ophthalmologists/optometrists to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease. Candidates must possess a strong work ethic and professional demeanor. The ideal candidate will also have a strong desire to learn and succeed; ongoing learning is an important part of the job, and we support both in clinic and ongoing educational training. Daily tasks will include testing patient’s far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease. Examines eye, using slit lamp, for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers. Tests patient’s field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects. Performs other tests and measurements as requested by the physician.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of medical practices to assist in patient care
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and instrumentation
  • Ability to act independently and interact in a courteous and effective manner with physicians and the public
  • Skill in gathering, analyzing, and evaluating data
  • Skill in written and verbal communication, problem-solving and decision making
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of two years technician/assistant experience in an ophthalmology or optometry setting
  • Non-certified medical personnel with at least three years back-office experience in a healthcare setting

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of AAO Home Study Course OR completion of JCAHPO approved Ophthalmic Assistant program preferred (COA or COT)

Responsibilities

  • Explains to patient what patient should expect from technician’s work-up and MD/OD exam
  • Completes a detailed patient history including: past systemic and ocular history, family history, medication history including adverse drug reactions and allergies. Identifies patient’s chief complaint (reason for the visit) and history of present illness
  • Checks the patient’s uncorrected and corrected visual acuity for distance (snellen) and near (jaeger)
  • Neutralizes eyeglasses by either manual or automated lensometry. Neutralizes gas permeable or hard contact lenses (if applicable)
  • Performs auto-refraction and auto-keratometry (as appropriate) prior to MD/OD exam
  • Performs one or more of the following exams: Ishihara Color Vision, Stereo, Amsler and Confrontational Visual Field
  • Performs Applanation or tonopen on patient
  • Performs angle assessment and pupil assessment prior to dilating patient
  • Performs BAT and glare testing as directed by MD/OD
  • Performs corneal pachymetry when ordered by MD/OD
  • Routinely asks patients if they need prescription refills and prepares them for the MD’s signature. Accurately records patient’s compliance with prescribed ocular medications
  • Ability to insert and remove both soft and hard contact lenses
  • Performs HVF, OCT, topography and Lenstar as directed
  • Ensures that patient’s chart is put up in a timely manner after technician encounter.
  • Provide education and information regarding treatments prescribed by physician, including use of maintenance of contact lenses and pre- and post-operative instructions
  • Performs basic maintenance of instruments and equipment to ensure that they are clean and in proper working condition
  • Shows proficiency in practice EMR system
  • Performs inventory of assigned examining rooms to insure adequate supplies and stocks rooms
  • Displays courtesy and consideration to patients, guests, physicians and staff
  • Returns phone calls (triage calls) to patients calling with concerns
  • Sends E-refills into pharmacies as directed by MD/OD
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines
