About The Position

This individual is responsible for performing an extensive number of data collection functions, as delegated by the physician, to allow for proper diagnosis of the patients condition. The role involves interacting with patients using respect and professionalism, communicating about processes and procedures, and ascertaining patient needs. The Ophthalmic Technician provides telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills, and patient care questions, while adhering to approved policies and procedures. A key part of the role is obtaining comprehensive patient history and completing accurate documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The position also requires performing various ophthalmic procedures, assisting in maintaining exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing instruments, preparing for certification tests, and maintaining HIPAA compliancy.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or in the process of getting certification
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in ophthalmology/optometry setting
  • Fundamental experience working with standard ophthalmic evaluation equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performing data collection functions as delegated by the physician.
  • Interacting with patients with respect and professionalism.
  • Communicating processes and procedures to patients.
  • Ascertaining patient needs and unusual circumstances.
  • Seeking advice from senior staff or doctors when necessary.
  • Providing telephone support for ocular emergencies, prescription refills, and patient care questions.
  • Adhering to approved policies and procedures.
  • Obtaining patient history, including chief complaint, history of present illness, past history, family history, and history of allergies and medications.
  • Completing accurate and concise documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Performing accurate and consistent patient care procedures, including visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, evaluation of motility and pupillary function tests, Applanation tonometry and tono-pen tonometry, refractometry, angle assessment and dilation of pupils, automated visual field testing, ophthalmic imaging, retina and optic nerve scanning (OCT), corneal topography, keratometry and pachymetry.
  • Assisting in maintaining exam rooms by cleaning between patients and at the end of the day.
  • Cleaning and sterilizing instruments.
  • Preparing to take certification test.
  • Maintaining HIPAA compliancy.
