About The Position

SightMD is a rapidly growing integrated ophthalmic provider group seeking an Ophthalmic Technician. This role is vital as an assistant to physicians, involving both administrative and clinical duties. The technician will prepare patients for physician examinations, maintain examination rooms, perform vision screenings, administer eye medications, maintain ophthalmic instruments, and assist with minor surgical and laser procedures. The company has over 127 eye care providers and 60 locations across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, with a legacy of over 50 years in eye care excellence.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent
Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification required or enrolled within one year and completion within two years of hire
Strong customer service skills with a professional and friendly demeanor.
Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking abilities.
Skilled in problem-solving with strong attention to detail.
Comfortable engaging in face-to-face interactions with patients and staff.
Ability to stand for long periods of time

Responsibilities

Greet and communicate with patients and their families with care and respect.
Initiate patient evaluations by accurately documenting chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and pertinent information.
Coordinate and obtain prior authorizations for medications.
Perform pre-exam testing, including visual acuity, visual fields, extraocular muscle testing, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, angle assessment, and dilation.
Conduct advanced diagnostic testing such as OCT, fundus photography, IOL Master, Pentacam, A-scan, B-scan, Wave Scan/Vario, keratometry, lensometry, and visual field testing.
Perform specialized testing including color vision screening, stereopsis, dry eye testing, optical biometry, and refractometry.
Assist with in-office minor surgical procedures and laser treatments.
Complete prescription refill requests as authorized by the physician.
Track, document, and communicate laboratory results to physicians and patients.
Educate patients on medication use and provide pre- and post-operative instructions.
Assist with contact lens fittings and provide patient instruction.
Maintain and manage inventory of ophthalmic supplies, pharmaceuticals, and instruments.
Inspect and assist with the maintenance of clinical examination equipment, report damage, and coordinate repairs.
Assist with cleaning surgical instruments for sterilization.
Properly shut down and clean diagnostic testing equipment.
Check and record medical refrigerator temperatures daily, monitor supply dates, and manage inventory.
Open and close exam rooms daily, including cleaning equipment, charging devices, and securing instruments.
Assist with opening and closing the clinic as needed.
Follow all safety protocols and clinic procedures.
Monitor and respond to work emails and utilize shared tools like Google Drive.
Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA regulations.
Participate in training and educational opportunities.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
