About The Position

UPMC Comprehensive Eye Service is hiring a full-time Ophthalmic Technician to join their team at Mercy. This is a Monday through Friday daylight position with hours between 7:30am to 5:30pm, dependent on clinic schedules. No evenings, weekends, and select holidays off! If you have a passion for patient care and work well on a team, this opportunity is for you. This department provides different opportunities with various types of exams, such as simple follow ups from the walk-in clinic, diabetic eye exams, comprehensive eye exams, and cataract evaluations. Purpose: Obtain detailed information from patients and perform a variety of diagnostic tests to the eyes to aid in the diagnosis and treatment course.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Valid CPR certification
  • Act 34

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred.
  • Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
  • Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.
  • Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuity.
  • Lensometry: automated and manual.
  • Pupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.
  • Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fields
  • Ocular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmus.
  • Refractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
  • Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.
  • Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare test.
  • Angle assessment & dilation of pupils.
  • Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.
  • Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.
  • Travel to other clinical sites.
