About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician will support the department and physicians in the Ophthalmology department, performing highly complex functions under the general supervision of a licensed medical practitioner or health professional. The Technician will receive written or oral instructions as to priorities, scheduling, or technical requirements and are expected to carry out assignments under general supervision, consulting with the licensed medical practitioner or health professional. This position requires the Ophthalmic Technician to provide work up support to physicians and other senior clinical staff. The Ophthalmic Technician performs routine clinical and clerical work.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Graduate of an ophthalmic program in lieu of 1 year of prior experience working as an Ophthalmic Technician in a physician practice.
  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Must have exceptional customer service and telephone etiquette.
  • Must have ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow.
  • Must have computer and/or EMR experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates and/or Bachelor's degree.
  • Additional years of experience working in Ophthalmology multi-specialty practice.
  • Experience working with Electronic Medical Records.
  • Ophthalmic Certification Preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Place patients in the examination rooms and document using the electronic medical record, medications, history and main reason for the visit.
  • Perform screening procedures, which include but is not limited to, history, chief complaint, color vision, stereo, and visual acuity.
  • Assist with setting up and preparing the patient and equipment for exams and special procedures as needed.
  • Enter proposed orders into Electrical Medical Record for licensed independent provider review and approval.
  • Obtain previous test results from outside labs, radiology, physicians’ offices, etc.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies according to regulations.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of ophthalmic inventory in each exam room.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of each exam room.
  • Prepare rooms after each patient and for specific procedures as needed.
  • Order supplies as needed.
  • Ensure HIPAA and OSHA guidelines are followed at all times.
  • Perform administrative duties when needed; answering phones, scheduling appointments, etc.
  • Adheres to protocol for patient flow.
  • Adheres to Visit Completion Protocol.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned by management.
