About The Position

This is a part-time Ophthalmic Technician position focused on patient care, diagnostic testing, and administrative support within an ophthalmic office. The role involves direct patient interaction, accurate documentation, and ensuring the smooth operation of the examination rooms and equipment.

Requirements

  • Punctuality for scheduled shifts and meetings.
  • Ability to keep exposed lenses, mirrors, and prisms clean.
  • Ability to check that all equipment is where it belongs.
  • Ability to organize rooms between patients.
  • Ability to keep med cabinets organized.
  • Ability to refill cotton balls and chin paper.
  • Ability to file charts during downtime.
  • Ability to clean and stock exam rooms every morning.
  • Ability to keep lenses (+20D, +80D) in containers when closing rooms.
  • Ability to turn off lights and power to all equipment at the end of the day.
  • Ability to determine which patients should be taken next from the waiting room to have treatment initiated.
  • Ability to escort patients from waiting room to the treatment room.
  • Ability to advise patients of who will see them next, and make patients comfortable during their wait.
  • Ability to maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician.
  • Obtain and document patient history.
  • Perform documentation and measurement tasks including visual acuity, refraction, tonometry, pupils, schirmer testing, dilation, color screening, visual field, corneal modeling, laser interferometry, auto refraction, auto keratometry, manual keratometry, glare testing, A-scan, photos, HRT, and Topography.
  • Assist in the performance of complex clinical procedures.
  • Direct patient care including changing of dressings, instilling of eye drops and ointments.
  • Administer oral medications.
  • Instruct in home care.
  • Refill Rx with doctors approval and document in the chart.
  • Escort patient to optical shop after dilation or after exam as appropriate.
  • Inform potential LASIK candidates of options and inform doctor of interest when necessary with chart documentation.
  • Schedule LASIK consult whenever possible or document interest on schedule sheet.

Responsibilities

  • Acquaint new patients with office procedures and inform them about the purpose and process of tests.
  • Obtain and document comprehensive patient history, including chief complaint, medical history, family history, allergies, medications, social history, and review of systems.
  • Perform and record various diagnostic measurements and tests such as visual acuity, refraction, tonometry, pupil assessment, Schirmer testing, visual field testing, corneal modeling, and more.
  • Assist with complex clinical procedures, including changing dressings, instilling eye drops and ointments, and administering oral medications.
  • Instruct patients on home care.
  • Refill prescriptions with doctor's approval and document in the patient chart.
  • Escort patients to the optical shop or after their examination.
  • Inform potential LASIK candidates about options and document their interest.
  • Schedule LASIK consultations when possible.
  • Be punctual for scheduled shifts and meetings.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment like lenses, mirrors, and prisms.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly stored.
  • Organize examination rooms between patients.
  • Maintain organization of medication cabinets.
  • Refill supplies such as cotton balls and chin paper.
  • File charts during downtime.
  • Clean and stock examination rooms daily.
  • Store lenses in containers at the end of the day.
  • Turn off lights and equipment power at the end of the day.
  • Determine patient priority for treatment initiation from the waiting room.
  • Escort patients to the treatment room.
