About The Position

The Senior Ophthalmic Technician will support the department and physicians in the Ophthalmology department, will perform highly complex functions under the general supervision of a licensed medical practitioner or health professional. He / She will receive written or oral instructions as to priorities, scheduling, or technical requirements and are expected to carry out assignments under general supervision, consulting with the licensed medical practitioner or health professional.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum One (1) year of full time experience working in an Ophthalmology practice.
  • Must have full working knowledge and hands on experience with Visual Fields, Corneal Topography, IOL, OCT, A/B Scans, Fundus and External Photography, and Manifest Refractions.
  • Must have exceptional customer service and telephone etiquette.
  • Must have ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow.
  • Must have computer and/or EMR experience.
  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates and/or Bachelor's degree.
  • Additional years of experience working in Ophthalmology multi-specialty practice.
  • Experience working with Electronic Medical Records.
  • Ophthalmic Certification Preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains all base line information for the physician, including all ancillary testing.
  • Performs initial history taking, including recording presenting complaint, document past ocular history, medications, allergies, and etc.
  • Obtains and records visual acuity, refraction, color testing, lensometry and intraocular pressure.
  • Performs ancillary testing visual fields, corneal topography, HRT, Pentacam, IOL, OCT A and B scan, and Fundus photography.
  • Place patients in the examination rooms and document using the electronic medical record, medications, history and main reason for the visit.
  • Perform screening procedures, which include but is not limited to, history, chief complaint, color vision, stereo, and visual acuity.
  • Assist with setting up and preparing the patient and equipment for exams and special procedures as needed.
  • Enter proposed orders into Electrical Medical Record for licensed independent provider review and approval.
  • Obtain previous test results from outside labs, radiology, physicians’ offices, etc.
  • Explain treatment procedures, eye medications, and physicians’ instructions to the patient in a clear and effective manner.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies according to regulations.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of ophthalmic inventory in each exam room.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of each exam room.
  • Prepare rooms after each patient and for specific procedures as needed.
  • Order supplies as needed.
  • Ensure HIPAA and OSHA guidelines are followed at all times.
  • Perform administrative duties when needed; answering phones, scheduling appointments, etc.
  • Adheres to protocol for patient flow.
  • Adheres to Visit Completion Protocol.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned by management.
