About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician 1 (OT1) is competent in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. The position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system. This role provides patient-centric care and adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training. The OT1 complies with regulations, maintains patient confidentiality, and follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control. The position also requires attending educational courses, demonstrating high quality of work, meeting daily productivity goals, ensuring equipment is calibrated, participating in clinical research, organizing and stocking rooms, traveling to satellite centers, working evenings and weekends as needed, completing IVI (intravitreal injection) prep, facilitating motility exams, and supporting Virtual Care encounters and exams.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification and licensing
  • 1 year of relevant experience
  • Works well with patients of all age groups.
  • Presents with a professional appearance.
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Displays basic knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using the EMR telehealth platform.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents clinical testing in the electronic medical record, including reason for visit, tangent screen visual fields, chief complaint, basic ocular motility, history of present illness, pupillary evaluation, basic review of systems, ocular surface assessment, review of systemic and ocular medications, eye drop administration, record allergies, intraocular pressure (Goldman, Tono-Pen, I-Care), pharmacy information, pachymetry, family/social/medical/ocular history, insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses, visual acuity at distance and near, color vision test, lensometry, stereopsis test, manual refraction, sensorimotor exam, confrontational fields, automated & manual perimetry, Humphrey visual fields, Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields, and Amsler Grid visual fields.
  • Provides support to providers, including documentation in patient charts as directed for patient care.
  • Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
  • Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
  • Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
  • Facilitates motility exams.
  • Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
