The Ophthalmic Technician 1 (OT1) is competent in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. The position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • 1 year of relevant experience
  • Works well with patients of all age groups.
  • Presents with a professional appearance.
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Analyzes, organizes, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Completes assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Displays basic knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using the EMR telehealth platform.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record: Reason for visit, Chief complaint, History of present illness, Review of systems, Review systemic and ocular medications, Record allergies, Pharmacy information, Family, social, medical, and ocular history, Visual acuity at distance and near, Lensometry, Manual refraction, Confrontational fields, Humphrey visual fields, Tangent screen visual fields, Basic ocular motility, Pupillary evaluation, Ocular surface assessment, Eye drop administration, Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-Care, Pachymetry, Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses, Color vision test, Stereopsis test, Sensorimotor exam, Automated & manual perimetry, Amsler Grid visual fields.
  • Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
  • Provides patient-centric care.
  • Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.
  • Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
  • Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
  • Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
  • Meets daily productivity goals.
  • Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
  • Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
  • Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
  • Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
  • Works evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Performs organizational duties as assigned.
  • Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
  • Facilitates motility exams.
  • Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
