About The Position

The Ophthalmic Tech II role involves direct and indirect patient care within the AMG Aurora Highland Ave - Ophthalmology department. The position requires a full-time commitment, working 40 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, with rotating Saturday shifts. Key responsibilities include performing manifest refractions and refinements, accurately assessing auto-refraction and current glasses, using the Jackson Cross Cylinder for axis refinement, fogging vision, and refining for binocular balancing. The role also involves accurately performing Goldmann Applanation Tonometry, assessing anterior chamber angle depth, and potentially performing fundus photography and Ascan biometry. Indirect patient care includes ordering tests, assisting with results communication, reporting abnormal findings, triaging messages, explaining procedures, and acting as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers. Documentation in the EMR, completing vouchers, referrals, and requisitions accurately, and ensuring all patient documentation is completed within two business days are also crucial. Effective telephone communication, including answering promptly, using scripting, maintaining a courteous tone, and transferring calls appropriately, is expected. Time management skills are essential for maintaining room readiness, checking equipment, and demonstrating flexibility in performing additional duties as directed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• 3-5 years experience in Ophthalmology
• Demonstrates proficiency in refracting and applanation tonometry.
• Good communication skills
• CPR Certification within 90 days
• Ability to work with all levels of personnel.
• Ability to work under stressful situations.
• Frequent periods of extended standing and sitting.
• Possible lifting and assisting of patients.
• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.

Nice To Haves

• Ability to type a minimum of 20wpm preferred.

Responsibilities

• Understands the complexity of the process of prescribing glasses for distance, intermediate, near, and astigmatism. (refraction/refinement)
• Demonstrates the ability to proficiently perform the technical procedure of Manifest Refraction and Refinement.
• Demonstrates the ability to proficiently complete the 4 steps of refinement: Sphere, Cylinder, Axis, Sphere
• Demonstrates the knowledge needed to accurately assess the information provided by the auto-refraction and/or the patient’s current glasses in relationship to their vision and the health of their eye
• Demonstrates the ability to accurately use the Jackson Cross Cylinder for refining axis
• Demonstrates the ability to accurately fog vision and refine patient to obtain binocular balancing
• Demonstrates the ability to present to the physician the recommended Rx based on clinical findings and patient tolerances
• Demonstrates the ability to accurately perform Goldmann Applanation Tonometry to obtain intraocular pressures
• Demonstrates ability to accurately assess anterior chamber angle depth with the biomicroscope prior to dilating
• May perform fundus photography and/or Ascan biometry
• Consistently orders tests and assists the nurse or provider in communicating results according to department protocol or as ordered by physician.
• Reports abnormal findings, patient complaints, or concerns, to Physician, or Team Lead or Supervisor or Nurse when appropriate.
• Triages, prioritizes and completes messages, communicating information to patients in a timely manner.
• Explains procedures and test results using language appropriate to patient's level of understanding guided by department protocols or physician/nurse instructions.
• Serves as an advocate and liaison between patients, staff, physicians and external customers by sharing necessary information to ensure continuity of care.
• Provides consistent and accurate documentation of patient information, care and concerns in the EMR according to the guidelines provided in the Documentation Policy and as otherwise instructed
• Consistently completes vouchers, referrals and requisitions with all appropriate information including medical record number and services codes or using EMR
• Completes all patient documentation within two full clinic business days after care and/or services have been provided according to the Missing Documentation policy guidelines
• Answers the telephone promptly within three rings, transferring calls when appropriate.
• Utilizes outlined departmental and clinic scripting, including restating information to ensure clarity and accuracy.
• Displays a courteous, alert and pleasant tone of voice, speaking clearly and in a relaxed manner.
• Transfers calls when appropriate, staying on the line and announcing where and why call was transferred. Exceptions to announcing the call would include when transferring to an ACD agent.
• Communicates effectively with internal and external customers.
• Consistently watchful of patient flow by keeping rooms clean, stocked and available and maintains adequate inventory.
• Consistently checks equipment and trays for proper functioning and availability in busy times.
• Demonstrates flexibility by performing additional duties under the direction of licensed nursing staff or the provider.
