The Ophthalmic Assistant provides preliminary ocular assessment activities, completes data forms, acquaints patients with procedures, and performs various ophthalmic diagnostic tests. They assist Ophthalmologists and Optometrists by obtaining medical histories, performing preliminary eye function testing, explaining medication and procedure information to patients, and preparing patients for exams. The role also involves performing regular instrument maintenance, automated tests, setting up operating room instruments, and assisting with minor surgeries.

Requirements

  • Specialized Diploma Medical Assistant/Administrative Medical Assistant or Ophthalmic experience.
  • 1 year medical office or ophthalmic experience.
  • Ability to accept and adapt to constant change within a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire

Responsibilities

  • Provides a variety of preliminary ocular assessment activities and completes data forms/paperwork for clinical visits.
  • Acquaints patients with procedures and performs various ophthalmic diagnostic tests.
  • Assists Ophthalmologists and Optometrists by obtaining medical histories, performing preliminary eye function testing, explaining information to patients regarding medications and procedures, and preparing the patient for the exam.
  • Begins the examination with standard tests and measurements.
  • Performs regular instrument maintenance and automated tests, sets up operating room instruments, and assists with minor surgeries.
  • Assists with appointments and telephone screening activities.
  • Communicates with pharmacies regarding prescription refills and records prescriptions in patient charts.
  • Performs basic slit lamp examinations and basic ocular motility testing.
  • Administers ophthalmic drops and ointments; applies ocular dressings and shields.
  • Assists in the measuring of prescription glasses (refractometry) and measuring eye pressure (tonometry) of patients.
  • Assists with minor surgical procedures, intraocular injections, and laser treatments in exam/treatment room including prepping patients for sterile procedures.
  • Assists with contact lens fitting and patient instructions; prepares for/assists with in-office procedures.
  • Ensures adequate inventory of medical supplies, educational materials, and medications for patients care.
  • Maintains ophthalmic instruments and equipment per policy and procedures.
