About The Position

Under the supervision of a licensed clinician, the Ophthalmic Assistant supports the delivery of high-quality eye care in an outpatient clinic. This role combines hands-on patient care, clinical testing, ophthalmic procedures, and administrative responsibilities to help ensure a smooth and positive patient experience.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent required
Basic knowledge of medical terminology, or the ability to learn and apply medical terminology in the clinical setting.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and families.
Ability to provide age-appropriate care and support based on patients’ developmental, mental, and physical needs.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing needs, and remain organized in a fast-paced, high-volume clinic environment.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with physicians, clinicians, and other members of the care team.
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to make appropriate decisions within the scope of the role.
Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite, or the ability to learn new systems and technology.

Nice To Haves

Previous experience in an ophthalmic or healthcare setting preferred.
0–1 year of experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform a variety of vision and ocular tests, imaging, and assessments to prepare patients for comprehensive eye examinations.
Identify and administer diagnostic eye drops as directed by the clinician and in accordance with established protocols.
Assist the ophthalmologist with minor in-office procedures, including injections and cryotherapy, under appropriate supervision and direction.
Maintain exam rooms with adequate medical and ophthalmic supplies.
Measure and document vital signs as directed for procedures and other clinical needs.
Clean, calibrate, and perform basic maintenance of ophthalmic equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and infection control standards.
Properly handle, store, and transport specimens, instruments, and medications according to established procedures.
Support administrative functions, including patient call triage and in-basket management, as assigned.
Provide cross-coverage at other ophthalmology services and locations as needed.
Follow hospital policies and procedures, applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and Joint Commission standards.
