The Ophthalmic Assistant performs basic preliminary testing, including obtaining visual acuity, lensometry, measuring and recording intraocular pressure using a tonopen, administering topical eye medications per physician order in preparation for an ophthalmic exam, and obtaining vital signs as needed, documenting all in the EMR. This role also records relevant detailed patient medical/ocular history, confirms allergies, and updates medications. The Ophthalmic Assistant performs Automated Visual Field Testing, demonstrates the ability to troubleshoot visual field equipment problems and initiate repair processes, and ensures exam rooms and lanes are stocked with needed supplies. Additionally, they participate in their own professional development by maintaining required competencies, continuing education, and CPR certification. The Ophthalmic Assistant escorts patients to exam rooms and screening areas, demonstrates dedication to patient service and care by serving as a role model, and performs other job-related duties incidental to the work described, based on a non-certified ophthalmic assistant.
