About The Position

Mercyhealth is an integrated health system that delivers exceptional, coordinated care across seven hospitals, 85 primary and specialty clinics, and a team of over 7,500 professionals serving northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. We are seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to join our team. This role is responsible for patient care, including rooming patients, collecting assessment data, administering medications, and assisting physicians during treatments, testing, and examinations. The Ophthalmic Assistant will perform various diagnostic procedures, maintain patient flow, provide patient education, and document patient care. This position also involves responding to telephone calls, triaging patients, and following up on patient care as needed. The ideal candidate will have good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Requirements

High School diploma preferred.
Prefer education as a paraprofessional in ophthalmology or optometry.
Good interpersonal/communicative skills needed.

Responsibilities

Rooming patients and collecting patient assessment data.
Administering medications and performing other patient care procedures as directed.
Assisting physicians during treatment, testing, refractometry, and examinations.
Performing retinoscopy, refractometry, A/B scans, photography, fluorescein angiography, corneal/disc topography, assisting in surgery, low vision evaluations, visual fields, and applanations.
Maintaining timely flow of patients.
Providing patient and family education.
Documenting patient care and related information.
Responding to incoming telephone calls and performing telephone triaging of patients.
Following up on patient care as needed.
Reviewing and maintaining charts.
Participating in QA & I.
