The Ophthalmic Assistant performs preliminary screenings as ordered by a physician, including obtaining detailed patient medical/ocular histories, visual acuity, tonometry, lensometry, pupil exams, instilling ocular medication, and visual field testing. This role is responsible for maintaining assigned ophthalmic exam lanes and equipment, ensuring cleanliness according to guidelines, and maintaining the physical environment of exam rooms. The Ophthalmic Assistant ensures exam rooms are stocked appropriately, interacts professionally and courteously with patients, families, coworkers, and physicians, and always maintains patient confidentiality. This position contributes to a positive workplace atmosphere and participates in professional development by maintaining required competencies and continuing education hours according to JCAHPO guidelines. The Ophthalmic Assistant also maintains current CPR certification and may perform prescription refills under physician direction. This role serves as a role model in delivering quality patient care and performs other duties as assigned based on certification level.
