About The Position

Duke Health Integrated Practice encompasses over 110 primary and specialty outpatient clinics across North Carolina. We are seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant to work under close supervision, assisting an Eye Center physician and other technical support personnel. The primary role involves performing diagnostic tests essential for evaluating patient eye problems.

Requirements

  • Work requires an education background generally equivalent to a high school education.
  • Work requires 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review, including central and peripheral visual field tests, simple color vision tests, indentation and applantation tonometry tests to determine intraocular pressure, and pupil testing for size, equality, and reaction prior to dilation.
  • Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and document any variations from normal.
  • Measure patient acuity, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision; obtain optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems; record findings on patient charts.
  • Administer Electro-Retinogram and Electro-Oculogram tests to patients.
  • Obtain medical and personal data for patient charts.
  • Assist the physician in fitting patients with contact lenses.
  • Calibrate and maintain all instruments used, including biomicroscopes, lensometer, keratometer, tangent screen, slit lamp, and tonometers.
  • Clean and stock consultation rooms and microbiology laboratory with drugs and other supplies as needed.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
