About The Position

JOB SUMMARY The Ophthalmic Assistant supports ophthalmologists by obtaining medical histories, performing preliminary eye function testing, and educating patients on medications and procedures. This role involves gathering essential information to assist the ophthalmologist with diagnosis and treatment. Ophthalmic Assistants typically see patients before the physician, prepare them for examination, and perform standard tests and measurements to ensure a smooth clinical flow.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year of experience in an ophthalmology setting required
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic conditions affecting the eye
  • Knowledge of ultrasound and visual field-testing equipment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent computer and electronic medical record (EMR) skills
  • Valid CPR certification

Responsibilities

  • Administer or prepare medications as directed and instilling ophthalmic drops
  • Review patient charts prior to exams to anticipate procedures, supplies, and necessary equipment
  • Obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, medical history, family history, and history of allergies and medications
  • Document examination findings accurately in the patient chart as dictated by the ophthalmologist
  • Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tests including Visual acuity, Confrontational visual fields, Stereo testing, Evaluation of motility, Pupillary function tests, Color plates, Applanation Tonometry, Refractometry, Angle assessment, Dilation of pupils, visual field testing, Optic nerve scanning (OCT), and Corneal topography
  • Provide patients with verbal and written instructions regarding medications, procedures, and treatment plans
  • Answer patient questions, return follow-up calls, and provide guidance as needed
  • Handle triage calls and process medication refill requests
  • Assist the physician with minor surgical procedures, particularly when scribes are unavailable
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain clinical equipment
  • Perform all Visual Field testing, scan results into charts, document appropriately, and update patient records after physician review
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and practice policies
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support clinical operations
