We are seeking a detail-oriented and clinically knowledgeable Operatory Surgical Coding Specialist to join our Operatory team. In this role, you will ensure accurate posting of surgical cases, proper billing of supplies and implants, and correct CPT/HCPCS coding in collaboration with surgeons, clinical staff, and the Operatory Director. This position plays a critical role in optimizing reimbursement, preventing charge leakage, maintaining compliance, and ensuring accurate documentation for all office-based surgical procedures. The ideal candidate combines clinical knowledge with strong billing and coding expertise to ensure every procedure, supply, and implant is documented, coded, and billed accurately, supporting both compliance and financial performance.

Requirements

  • Must have previous experience in Orthopedics
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), CCS-P, CRC, or similar coding credentials.
  • Working knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and modifier coding.
  • Experience in a surgical environment (ASC, hospital OR, or office-based operatory).
  • Strong understanding of surgical workflows, supplies, implants, and instrumentation.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working within an electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, clinical teams, and administrative staff.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately post surgical cases using appropriate CPT, HCPCS, and modifier coding.
  • Review operative documentation to ensure coding accuracy and completeness.
  • Partner directly with surgeons to validate procedures performed and confirm surgical assistant billing requirements.
  • Identify and resolve coding discrepancies or missing documentation prior to claim submission.
  • Reconcile cut sheets, purchase orders, bill-only documentation, and operative records.
  • Verify surgical supply and implant utilization for accurate charge capture.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain and clinical teams to ensure proper inventory and implant tracking.
  • Support implant and consignment billing processes to maximize reimbursement.
  • Audit surgical cases to identify opportunities for improved reimbursement and charge capture.
  • Minimize revenue leakage through accurate documentation and coding practices.
  • Maintain compliance with coding, billing, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation within the EHR and inventory management systems.
