About The Position

This role is for an Operator Trainee responsible for learning and performing various duties within the refinery operations. The trainee will focus on safety procedures, effective communication, understanding and following operational procedures, and performing hands-on tasks related to equipment operation and maintenance. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, basic maintenance skills, troubleshooting abilities, and the initiative to work towards refinery goals. A valid driver's license and TWIC card are required, along with basic Microsoft Office knowledge and proficiency in company-specific software.

  • Must have the initiative to work toward refinery goals.
  • Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot operations problems.
  • Has a good working relationship with Unit Leaders, Console and Field Operators, Operations Specialists, Shift Superintendents Area Superintendents, and Engineers.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Proficiently utilizes and navigates software required to complete the daily, routine business of HRC

Responsibilities

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Emergency Drill Parties.
  • Learn and understand Hunt Refining Company’s safety policies and their use in all work activities (e.g., LOTO).
  • Learn and know locations of safety-related items such as fire monitors, extinguishers, emergency showers, and self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Learn and understand hazards associated with process streams, chemicals, and operating equipment.
  • Learn and know how to access Safety Data Sheet Information.
  • Respond to callouts and emergency situations.
  • Help keep the unit and equipment clean and hazard-free.
  • Learn to become proficient with all power failure and field-related emergency procedures.
  • Give concise, accurate verbal summaries of shift activities to relief personnel.
  • Give and receive verbal, written, and electronic communication effectively and in a positive manner.
  • Communicate clearly, precisely, and effectively over the radio.
  • Check email periodically throughout the shift.
  • Read and follow all applicable guidelines or procedures, including MOC’s and training.
  • Review unit operation from previous shifts by reading logs and electronic communication.
  • Communicate any process variations that affect other areas.
  • Record daily activities and adjustments in the electronic log.
  • Stay up to date with online EHS training, refresher training on procedures, and security training.
  • Learn and know the location of all written policies and procedures on the Company Intranet.
  • Continually improve process and safety knowledge.
  • Learn and know equipment descriptions and their locations.
  • Support and participate in OJT and any training in their Unit Processing area.
  • Learn and/or know Unit trips, set points, and permissives to restart after a safety system is activated.
  • Assist the Console Operator and Unit Leader in troubleshooting activities.
  • Minimize hydrocarbon and excess water to the water treatment plant.
  • Seek clarification when guidelines and procedures are unclear or in conflict.
  • Work diligently towards meeting guideline targets and refinery goals.
  • Ensure unit and equipment are operated within specified limits.
  • Perform any task requested by supervision.
  • Write work orders as needed and notify the Unit Leader.
  • Learn and/or understand safe heater lighting steps and BMS panel operation and trips for all heaters.
  • Provide feedback to the Console Operator when lighting heaters in the field.
  • Work to positively address any operating or personnel issues that arise.
  • Learn to isolate and prepare all field equipment for maintenance.
  • Perform needed maintenance on shift as necessary.
  • Obtain samples for the lab as necessary.
  • Routinely sample process gases for H2S.
  • Make routine field adjustments to maintain process conditions, flows, levels, pressures, and temperatures.
  • Take inventory of lube oil and chemicals and order as needed.
  • Blow down level glasses or float chambers to check a level.
  • Check cooling tower screens and have them cleaned as necessary.
  • Adjust the boiler's continuous blow down line and daily perform a manual blow down.
  • Maintain the given injection rate of chemicals into process streams.
  • Monitor lab reports and set and maintain chemical addition or proper treatment of boiler feed water and cooling tower water.
  • Check steam traps, steam tracing, and water for proper winterization.
  • Check color on product streams as necessary.
  • Monitor fin-fans for freeze protection in cold weather.
  • Control the level of water or hydrocarbon accumulation by periodic draining.
  • Switch pumps, purge or switch compressors online without interruption of the process when necessary.
  • Start/stop or reset electric motors as necessary.
  • Put control valves on bypass as necessary.
  • Perform heater activities such as using snuffing steam, purging heaters, lighting gas pilots and burners, adjusting air registers and dampers, using O2 analyzer for efficiency, and inspecting heater boxes.
  • Check DCS indications against local instruments to verify readings.
  • Take inventory of Nitrogen (N2) bottles and report needs to Unit Leader (does not apply to C&R employees).
  • Bypass water softener system when necessary (does not apply to C&R or Oil Movement employees).
  • Line up city water and well water as necessary (does not apply to C&R or Oil Movement employees).
  • Light and adjust steam to the flare and check K/O drums for proper operation and drainage.
  • Line up charge tanks and product rundown to various product tanks and line up slop lines.
  • Establish alternate cooling in the glycol circulation system for compressor cooling, as necessary (Does not apply to C&R employees).
  • Troubleshoot all treated water fixed equipment.
  • Check operating equipment for any abnormal conditions (Pumps, Compressors, Fans) and report to Unit Leader.
