About The Position

Marathon Petroleum Company LP, a recognized leader in the energy industry, is accepting applications for an hourly Operator Technician position in its Mandan Refinery in Mandan, ND. This position offers immediate responsibility and a generous benefit package. The Mandan refinery operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Operators work 12-hour shifts on 4 days on, 4 days off work schedule. Overtime is required based upon business needs. This position is unionized with USW Local 10. The successful applicant will adhere to a strict drug and alcohol policy and be part of a nine-month probationary period. Applicants will be required to pass a pre-employment written test, hands-on work demonstration, drug and alcohol screen, background check and physical assessment. Successful applicants will tentatively begin employment on August 17, 2026.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent required
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Basic math, reading, writing, computer, and verbal skills
  • Willingness to perform fire and emergency response activities.
  • Willingness to work a rotating shift schedule and overtime as required by business needs.
  • Ability to learn complex refinery related material.
  • Be fit to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Adherence to a strict drug and alcohol policy
  • Ability to lift, push, and/or pull up to 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous operator or petrochemical plant experience is a plus.
  • Relevant education, training and/or work experience is preferred, such as, two years vocational technical training curriculum in petrochemical/manufacturing or related field OR Two years equivalent work experience in a process operational/maintenance craft area OR Five years stable work experience in a light industrial or commercial industry.

Responsibilities

  • Live and demonstrate MPC’s core values.
  • Wear all protective equipment including a self-contained breathing apparatus along with the ability to participate in emergency response activities.
  • Learn refining process operations and qualify on process jobs.
  • Make periodic rounds per shift.
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, monitoring the units, equipment isolation, collecting stream samples and writing work permits.
  • Understand refining process operations, tank farm product movements, and qualify on tank farm jobs.
  • Duties include but are not limited to, monitoring tank levels and transfers, tank gauging, equipment isolation, collecting tank samples, and writing work permits.
  • Detects and respond to process upsets and emergency situations with response activities including but not limited to firefighting, equipment isolation and evacuation.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with applicable environmental regulations and company procedures, including the proper handling, containment, and disposal of waste materials generated during operations.
  • Ensure that waste streams are managed according to established protocols and that all documentation and reporting requirements are met to maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain assigned working locations in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Complete other tasks within the scope of duties as requested.
