About The Position

Repairs, maintains, and replaces bridges and structures in accordance with safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment-operation standards. The role performs skilled construction work including carpentry, welding, and concrete finishing; removes and installs structural components; and operates light and medium-duty highway equipment. It also supports emergency response, environmental protection, job-site safety, manual labor, and preventive maintenance. Work may involve heights, heavy traffic, water, and other adverse conditions.

Requirements

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain them thereafter.
Comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work at heights, in heavy traffic, over and in water, and under other adverse conditions.
Ability to work independently and as a team member.
Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices.
Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding or fabricating steel components.
Skill in operating light and medium-duty equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, and backhoes.
Skill in using hand and power tools.
Valid driver's license.
Safety shoes required.

Nice To Haves

Experience with light to medium-duty equipment and hand and power tools.
Valid flagger certification.
Valid Certified Crane Operator credential with appropriate endorsements.
Valid commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements.

Responsibilities

Perform carpentry, welding, and concrete-finishing tasks.
Remove and install structural components to erect, replace, or demolish structures.
Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures during emergency operations.
Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other emergency operations.
Clear roadways of snow, ice, and debris; clean up after accidents; and provide traffic control.
Apply appropriate in-stream and environmental protection measures during structural maintenance and construction.
Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment for maintenance and construction tasks.
Determine and demonstrate proper work-site protection; identify safety hazards and suggest improvements.
Wear personal protective equipment, use equipment safely, maintain knowledge of applicable safety rules and regulations, and apply MUTCD requirements for detours, lane closures, and work zones.
Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment and follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Participate as a working crew member in construction, repair, and maintenance of timber, steel, and concrete bridge elements and other structures.
Perform manual labor and other tasks to support the team.
Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
Transport personnel, equipment, and materials to and from work sites.
Maintain equipment safely and properly and complete pre-trip inspections for vehicles or equipment operated.
