Perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance. This role involves performing emergency roadway operations as an essential employee. Key responsibilities include operating and maintaining light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment and vehicles, preparing and operating equipment for snow and ice removal, clearing roadways of snow, ice, and debris, cleaning up after accidents, and providing traffic control. The position also requires adherence to strict safety protocols, including determining and demonstrating proper work site protection techniques, identifying workplace safety hazards, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, and maintaining knowledge of current safety rules and regulations (OSHA, VOSHA, etc.). Employees must use equipment properly and safely, apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, and work zones, and maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work environment, following VDOT safety regulations and practices. Manual labor tasks include participating as a working member of the crew, performing other maintenance tasks as needed, and using a variety of hand and power tools. Preventive maintenance involves repair, replacement, and upkeep of equipment, including completing pre-trip inspections. The role also includes installing, maintaining, and removing traffic control devices for work zones, detours, and lane closures, assisting in tracking inventory, and maintaining records.
