About The Position

The Operator in Training (OIT) program is designed to develop candidates' skills and knowledge necessary for a career as a Wastewater Operator. This program combines classroom, online, and on-the-job training to prepare participants for a Wisconsin Wastewater Operator certification. Trainees will gain hands-on experience at various facilities, including Jones Island WRF, South Shore WRF, and the Collection System, exposing them to diverse working conditions such as dirt, dust, extreme temperatures and humidity, odors, heights, confined spaces, gases, and raw sewage.

Requirements

High School Diploma/GED is required.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the job.
Ability to use computers and mobile devices to send and receive data.
Effective communicator and active listener.
Strong attention and unwavering commitment to safety.

Nice To Haves

Experience with basic machinery and hand tools is a plus.
A willingness to learn and an interest in a career in wastewater.

Responsibilities

Receive and follow all applicable safety training, including OSHA 10, Lockout-Tagout, Confined Space Entry, Working at Heights and Aerial Lift Training, and Use of Powered Industrial Trucks.
Utilize Job Safety Analyses and Mental Safety Assessments to identify and mitigate jobsite hazards.
Develop skills in using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), data management programs, and SCADA systems.
Interpret technical communications and documentation to understand system boundaries and functionality.
Learn to identify and troubleshoot equipment and machinery malfunctions.
Gain experience in Wastewater Operations, including daily operator rounds, sample collection, lab analysis, documentation, process control strategies, and mechanical, biological, and chemical treatment of wastewater streams.
