About The Position

Under general supervision, the Operations Technician I plays a critical role in supporting SEMCO Energy's Operations Department by performing a wide range of field responsibilities across a designated geographic area. This position is essential to ensure the safe and efficient maintenance of underground utility infrastructure through accurate locating, thorough documentation, and active participation in damage prevention efforts. The technician collaborates across departments, upholds compliance with industry regulations, including Public Act 174, and contributes to system upkeep, inspections, and various operational activities that protect community safety and support reliable gas distribution.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required.
Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License and eligible for company-provided vehicle insurance.
Capable of completing the Operator Qualification Program upon hire.
Excellent analytical, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
Working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications.
Ability to learn new systems or software packages as necessary.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of basic mechanical & electrical principles is preferred.

Responsibilities

Accurate monthly meter reading.
Completion of the Collections process (Communicate with customers, delivery of notices, collect payment, and shut-off pass-due accounts).
Schedule daily collections activity and document pass-due accounts.
Accurately post cash payments and timely payment notification.
Assist in other Operational Areas when required (“Miss-Dig”, leak survey, and inspection).
Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field.
