About The Position

The HLW Operations organization provides technical oversight, program support, and qualified staff to support the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) mission. The Operations Specialist job family is responsible for all activities relating to operations and maintenance associated with plant equipment and systems. A key activity is coordinating with and providing input to the Design Engineering disciplines on how the design should support operations and maintenance. The Operations Specialist will be directly responsible for supporting, planning, and coordinating operations and maintenance activities associated with assigned plant equipment and systems. This position will include supporting all operations and maintenance efforts for the facility. This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC. The following are typical activities for the HLW Operations I&C specialist: Provide technical expertise on critical HLW instrumentation (e.g., level instruments, transmitters, PDTs), including verification of redundancy strategies and ensuring instruments maintain operability for worker safety and batch continuity. Supply detailed C&I operations and maintenance input for design reviews to ensure system-level modeling assumptions are accurate. Determine instrument failure modes, repair timing, and system-level roll-up of impacts. Collaborate with maintenance teams to implement standardized maintenance strategies for HLW C&I components and ensure critical spares availability for instruments.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Associate’s degree in engineering or science or equivalent education desired.
  • Associate’s degree plus 8 years of relevant work experience
  • HS Diploma and 10+ years relevant work experience
  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without Amentum visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in engineering or science may be substituted for two years of experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with Instruments & Controls (I&C) as applied to facility operations and maintenance, including troubleshooting and system behavior during abnormal conditions.
  • Hands-on experience with remote, field, and control-room systems, including mechanical systems, pump/flow systems, electrical systems, cranes/hoists, process jumpers, remote waste handling equipment, manipulators, and instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide Operations and Maintenance input to Design Engineering for C&I systems to ensure operability, maintainability, testability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience reading and interpreting electrical and control & instrumentation drawings.
  • Knowledge of DOE operating policies, rules and regulations, and knowledge of industry codes and standards in nuclear operations desired.

Responsibilities

  • Represent Operations for interfaces with other project organizations on issues affecting operations and maintenance.
  • Understands and interprets the Operations Requirements Document as necessary to ensure that operations requirements are implemented into the design.
  • Demonstrate an understanding system design, operation, and maintenance including environmental, safety and health aspects, and regulatory conformance.
  • Remain apprised of design status and ongoing activities.
  • Participate in safety basis and environmental permitting activities to ensure that requirements can be successfully implemented with planned resources.
  • Participate in Project design and other activities to ensure, operability, maintainability, and testability are incorporated.
  • Support implementation of project wide initiatives affecting plant operations personnel and resources.
  • Review system operating manuals, emergency response procedures, and other operational documents and ensure that they can be effectively implemented by operating staff.
  • Develop facility related procedures, work instructions and training materials and support training implementation.
  • Perform Facility walkdowns to support Design, Construction, Operational and maintenance needs.
  • Identify deficiencies and initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Provide Operations and maintenance input to the design for I&C systems to ensure operability and maintainability for the systems.
  • Ensuring the standards set by the conduct of operations procedures are upheld in the planning and performance of all facility activities.
  • Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, others, and the environment.
