Operations Research Scientist
About The Position
DoorDash is hiring an Operations Research Scientist for its Assignment team to help build a reliable on-demand logistics engine and real-time logistics platform for its marketplace of consumers, merchants, and Dashers. The role uses logistics data, advanced optimization, and machine learning to improve dispatching decisions and maximize value for marketplace participants. It reports to an Operations Research manager and is hybrid. The scientist will design and implement algorithm components in the production dispatching system, apply optimization and machine learning methods, analyze and model logistics data, and translate findings into production algorithms. The role works across engineering, data science, product, and business operations teams to develop scalable solutions.
Requirements
- PhD in operations research, industrial engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of post-graduate research or industry experience solving complex optimization problems using mathematical programming or metaheuristics.
- Programming fundamentals, experience with object-oriented and functional programming languages, and an understanding of algorithms.
- Comfort regularly exercising discretion and independent judgment, including evaluating options, making informed decisions, and determining appropriate courses of action within assigned responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement new algorithm components within the production dispatching system to meet emerging requirements.
- Integrate state-of-the-art optimization and machine learning techniques to improve the efficiency and quality of dispatching decisions.
- Analyze logistics data and develop models to extract insights, then translate those insights into production algorithm components.
- Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, product managers, business operators, and others to develop cross-cutting, scalable solutions that guide value for consumers, Dashers, and merchants.
