About The Position

The Operations Reliability Engineer guides development and operations teams toward reliable designs for Apple technology components, modules, and products. The role identifies high-risk failure modes early in the design life cycle and applies engineering expertise to determine effective mitigations before production ramp. The engineer works with New Product Introduction (NPI) Reliability teams and suppliers to plan, execute, analyze, and transition reliability testing. They communicate findings to cross-functional partners and senior management and help develop suppliers capable of supporting technology and volume scaling. The position requires willingness and ability to travel internally up to 20% to China or within the United States.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience performing reliability testing, including mechanical stress tests such as shock, drop, and vibration testing, as well as environmental and fatigue testing.
  • Experience with failure-analysis analytical and material-characterization techniques, such as optical microscopy, X-ray, SEM/EDS, FTIR, and XPS.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, such as Mechanical, Electrical, Reliability, Materials, Optical, Industrial, or a similar field.
  • Strong understanding of the physics behind mechanical, electrical, and optical material properties, and ability to use fundamental failure-analysis methodology to determine failure root causes.
  • Knowledge of reliability models, accelerated test models, and industry test standards such as JEDEC, MIL, ASTM, and IEEE.
  • Deep understanding of the application of DOE (Design of Experiments) and FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis).
  • Strong statistical and data-analytics skills, including statistical process control and sampling methods.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability, strong attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Dynamic, can-do attitude and desire to work with a team and on products.
  • Clear and consistent communication skills, including executive-level presentation skills, and ability to drive cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internally up to 20% to China or within the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Engineering, such as Mechanical, Electrical, Reliability, Materials, Optical, Industrial, or a similar field.

Responsibilities

  • Work with NPI Reliability teams and lead or participate in FMEA sessions to identify high-risk failure modes early in design and process life cycles.
  • Deliver test plans and procedures to third-party vendors and ensure testing is executed to Apple and industry standards.
  • Analyze test correlation across assembly nodes and align test pass/fail criteria, metrology systems, and cosmetic requirements.
  • Summarize reliability results and share findings with cross-functional partners and senior management.
  • Manage alignment and transition of reliability testing from NPI to mass production (MP).
  • Develop suppliers that can serve as technology and volume scaling partners.
