About The Position

The Operations Engineer works in roadway operations and maintenance and is part of the Roadway Operations and Maintenance Department. The individual is required to be competent in data collection and its consequent analysis to obtain efficient and practicable actions for the daily operations of the highway. This individual will report to the Operations Manager and will work closely with the C-suite management, engineers, employees, and external parties (contractors and consultants). He/she eventually will attend meetings with state and local officials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
  • Experience in data analytics is a must.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and in good standing.
  • Effectively manages tasks and tight deadlines
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be very detail oriented and have analytical capabilities
  • Innovative and flexible mindset
  • Ability to interact with colleagues in a self-managed team structure
  • Strong interpersonal communication, decision-making and resolution skills
  • Must be able to multitask, problem solve and prioritize, within a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to demonstrate computer proficiency, especially within Microsoft Excel, Word, and Power Point, as well as PC based programs
  • Experience in data analytics.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3+ years of experience in construction and/or roadway maintenance, or technical department in a major infrastructure developer are desirable
  • CAD and/or MicroStation experience desirable
  • Asset management tool and ArcGIS experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Support the safe and efficient operation of the I-77 corridor.
  • Support daily Operations & Maintenance (O&M) activities, including inspections and routine maintenance coordination.
  • Contribute to innovation initiatives, supporting the implementation of new tools, technologies, and process improvements across operations.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of operational projects, helping to improve performance, efficiency, and service quality across the corridor.
  • Coordinate with maintenance crews, contractors, and the Traffic Management Center (TMC) to plan and execute field work.
  • Track maintenance activities and prepare weekly and monthly performance reports.
  • Promote compliance with safety, environmental, and contractual requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners, including NCDOT and contractors.
  • Assist with traffic control and lane closure planning to ensure safe work zone operations.
  • Support incident response and traffic operations in coordination with the TMC.
