About The Position

Calpine, a business unit of Constellation Energy Corporation, is America's largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources. This role involves ensuring the availability and proper functioning of BESS systems, responding to alarms, performing plant rounds and inspections, and general housekeeping. The technician will be responsible for authoring, reviewing, and updating operational procedures, EHS policies, and maintenance documentation. They will perform scheduled maintenance, submit availability declarations, manage the plant logbook, oversee contractors, and issue/track work permits. Additionally, the role includes preparing Lock Out Tag Out procedures, de-energizing/re-energizing equipment, managing temporary electrical grounds, and maintaining site 125VDC backup batteries and chargers. The technician will also maintain and repair electrical equipment, instrumentation, and control systems, including the Distributed Control System (DCS). Troubleshooting, using a CMMS for maintenance, and optimizing the preventative maintenance program are key responsibilities. The role requires maintaining logs, manuals, records, blueprints, and operating procedures, and providing written reports on control system conditions. Safety is paramount, requiring compliance with all safety and health policies and active risk management. This is a senior-level position requiring specialized technical knowledge and expertise, with the ability to make decisions on complex technical issues, work independently, and mentor others. The technician will prioritize their own schedule and may guide others, providing on-the-job training in complex technical areas.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, degree from technical/vocational school or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in instrument/electrical and control system applications.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with an advanced understanding of chemistry, physics, electricity and mathematics.
  • Experience with DCS programming and configuration.
  • Advanced certifications/licensures.
  • Valid state driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring BESS systems are fully available and charging/discharging per dispatch.
  • Acknowledging and responding to alarms.
  • Performing plant rounds, inspections, and general housekeeping.
  • Authoring, reviewing and updating: Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Response Guides, EHS Policies.
  • Performing scheduled maintenance via assigned work orders.
  • Submitting daily availability declarations to scheduling coordinators.
  • Keeping the plant logbook.
  • Managing contractors.
  • Issuing & tracking permits for safe work, confined space, hot work and energized electrical work.
  • Review and update P&ID and electrical drawings.
  • Preparing and hanging Lock Out Tag Out.
  • De-energizing or re-energizing equipment fed from multiple AC and/or DC power sources.
  • Hanging temporary electrical grounds.
  • Maintain site 125VDC backup batteries and chargers.
  • Maintains and repairs electrical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Monitors, maintains, and repairs plant Distributed Control System (DCS).
  • Maintain, calibrate and repair plant electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Perform routine trouble shooting activities.
  • Use a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to effectively accomplish required maintenance in and efficient and organized manner.
  • Optimize plant preventative maintenance program to meet OEM recommendations, regulatory requirements, and corporate maintenance philosophy.
  • Responsible for maintaining logs, manuals, records, blueprints and operating procedures in a neat and professional manner.
  • Provide written reports on control system conditions when required.
  • Incorporates safe behavior into all activities and consistently complies with all established safety and health policies and procedures.
  • Helps to identify and eliminate or actively manage risks in all work activities.
  • Performs a variety of complex technical service/support duties requiring specialized knowledge.
  • Regularly makes decisions on non-routine or escalated technical issues.
  • Independently prioritizes and executes responsibilities effectively for a single trade, group of related tasks or functional area.
  • Checks own work and possibly the work of others; work results are of the highest quality standards and advanced technical competency.
  • Resolves the most complex technical issues, conferring with Team Leader occasionally; may serve as resource to others in resolution of complex issues.
  • Works under limited supervision.
  • Prioritizes own weekly schedule and may guide others in the completion of tasks within clearly defined schedules as set by management.
  • Regularly provides on-the-job skills training to others in complex technical areas.
