About The Position

The Operations Custodian will primarily be responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment, supporting urban Indigenous community members, staff, and visitors, including cleanliness of buildings and spaces, high traffic areas, general building maintenance, janitorial, grounds keeping and minor maintenance repairs for TBIFC facilities. Maintaining these facilities will ensure the health, safety, and security of staff, volunteers, visitors, and community members. In addition to custodial maintenance, the Operations Custodian will execute minor repair work, maintain equipment and oversee installations, and perform preventative inspections of systems relating to building mechanics.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a role demonstrating the command of the skill factors required to perform the role.
  • Proven ability to perform a wide variety of custodial and building maintenance duties.
  • Proficient in the use of relevant tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in commercial cleaning environments (disinfectants; neutral detergents; commercial wet/dry vacuums).
  • Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment; ability to interpret equipment manuals.
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation, fire codes, building codes, municipal bylaws, and various trades.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and how to identify and eliminate hazards.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with volunteers, participants, service providers, community partners and other staff members.
  • Ability to perform a variety of assigned tasks including the lifting of medium heavy loads.
  • Ability to prioritize day-to-day building maintenance needs to maintain building cleanliness and upkeep.
  • Good working knowledge of computers and related software such as Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to respond quickly in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision in a team-oriented setting.
  • High flexibility with strong interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and on-call for emergency response.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Will require a valid Drivers Abstract upon hiring.

Nice To Haves

  • Building Service Worker Certification and/or additional certifications in carpentry, mechanics, facilities maintenance, building construction or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture and experience working with Indigenous persons.
  • Understanding of the northern cultural environment.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language(s).
  • Valid First Aid / CPR certification.
