Operations & Automation Engineer

AmiveroWashington, DC

About The Position

The API Platform Operations and Automation Engineer supports the reliable operation and continuous improvement of the platform. This mid-level role combines hands-on platform operations with behind-the-scenes technical support for API consumers and producers. The engineer will troubleshoot REST API and platform issues, support deployments and routine maintenance, and help improve the team’s infrastructure-as-code, configuration-management, and containerized deployment capabilities. This role will also identify recurring customer-support and operational needs and translate them into practical improvements. Depending on the problem, the appropriate solution may include clearer documentation, an improved process, a script, a lightweight automation, or a platform enhancement. The engineer will work closely with Infrastructure, Customer Success and Support, User Experience Research, team leadership, and government partners. This is not primarily an evangelist or front-line customer-service role, but it requires the ability to communicate technical findings clearly and participate in customer-support activities when needed.

  • 3+ years of experience in related experience with platform engineering
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field and a minimum of four years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience consistent with the applicable contract LCAT.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience supporting and troubleshooting REST APIs. This includes knowledge of HTTP methods, status codes, headers, JSON, authentication and authorization, connectivity, rate limiting, and common API gateway errors.
  • Experience supporting an API gateway or enterprise API management platform. Experience with Apigee is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AWS and experience operating or troubleshooting workloads in a production or production-like cloud environment.
  • Working knowledge of Linux, preferably RHEL, including package management, permissions, security fundamentals, logs, shell scripting, and command-line troubleshooting.

  • Understanding of CI/CD concepts and working experience with Jenkins, Harness, GitHub Actions, or a comparable tool.
  • Experience using Python, Node.js, or shell scripting to automate operational or support tasks.
  • Experience using Terraform to support infrastructure-as-code and repeatable platform configuration.
  • Working knowledge of Ansible for configuration management and infrastructure automation.
  • Hands-on experience with Helm and familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes-based platform operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in at least one of the following areas: Terraform-based infrastructure-as-code and repeatable platform configuration; or Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm-based deployments, including release management, scaling, service exposure, ingress, and load-balancing configuration.
  • Working knowledge of networking concepts, load balancers, high-availability configurations, DNS, security groups, and network troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate technical problems, document findings, and recommend practical corrective actions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across Infrastructure, Customer Success and Support, User Experience Research, and government stakeholder teams.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and use Power Apps, Power Automate, or comparable lightweight automation tools when appropriate.
  • Ability to participate in occasional API onboarding, technical validation, or customer-support demonstrations.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Support and troubleshoot REST APIs, including HTTP requests and responses, authentication and authorization, JSON payloads, connectivity, rate limits, and API gateway errors.
  • Provide Tier 2 technical support for API consumer and producer issues escalated by the customer-support team, including reported outages, access problems, deployment issues, and unexpected platform behavior.
  • Perform routine platform maintenance and operational support across AWS and Linux environments.
  • Support platform deployments, configuration changes, troubleshooting, maintenance, and recovery activities.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Harness, GitHub Actions, or comparable tools.
  • Use Terraform and Ansible to support infrastructure-as-code, configuration management, repeatable platform configuration, and controlled infrastructure changes.
  • Use Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm to support containerized application deployments, release management, scaling, service exposure, ingress, and load-balancing configurations.
  • Troubleshoot networking, load balancers, security groups, connectivity, and high-availability configurations supporting the Apigee platform.
  • Identify recurring support and operational problems, evaluate their root causes, and recommend whether they should be addressed through process changes, documentation, automation, or platform improvements.
  • Develop scripts and lightweight automations using Python, Node.js, or shell scripting to reduce repetitive customer-support and infrastructure tasks.
  • Use or learn Power Apps, Power Automate, or comparable low-code tools when they are appropriate for the identified business need.
  • Improve internal processes and develop reusable tools that reduce manual work without creating unnecessary operational complexity.
  • Participate as a technical resource in API onboarding and validation demonstrations with API consumers and producers, as needed.
  • Communicate technical findings, risks, and recommended actions clearly to customer-support staff, engineers, team leadership, and government stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain runbooks, troubleshooting guidance, standard operating procedures, and other documentation that enables the team to resolve common issues consistently.
  • Collaborate with Customer Success and Support, User Experience Research, team leadership, and government partners to recommend practical process improvements and support customer time-to-value.
  • Contribute observations and lessons learned that help the team evaluate the effectiveness of its automations and process improvements.
