About The Position

The Rural Fire Service (RFS) is seeking a strategic and community-focused risk planning and emergency management professional for the Operational Officer Level 3 (Risk Planning Coordinator) role in Cameron Park. This position is part of the RFS OpO Program, which aims to create a mobile and agile workforce across NSW, offering opportunities to gain experience in various RFS activities. The role involves leading the delivery of Bush Fire Risk Management Plans and Fire Trail Plans, working with diverse stakeholders including local councils, emergency services, government agencies, and volunteers. The coordinator will play a key role in reducing bush fire risk before emergencies occur by overseeing and coordinating the work of Area Risk Planning and Fire Trails Officers, collaborating with Area Mitigation teams, and providing guidance to ensure hazard reduction programs target high-risk areas. Community engagement is crucial, requiring the ability to build and maintain strong relationships, translate complex risk information into practical advice, and influence outcomes for safer and more resilient communities. Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing bush fire risk mitigation strategies, including complex hazard reduction planning and hazard complaint management.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, coach and support others to achieve results in a complex and evolving environment.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and collaboration skills, with experience working across organisations to achieve shared outcomes.
  • RFS Group Leader qualification or the equivalent National Units of Competency (PUAOPE016 and PUAO123).
  • Diploma in a relevant discipline (i.e. Emergency Management, Project Management, Leadership) or equivalent expertise.
  • Level 2 Principal IMT qualification in Planning, Operations or Logistics.
  • A current Driver Licence and the willingness and ability to travel.
  • Completion of an Operational Officer Medical Assessment certifying the required level of general health and fitness (external candidates).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using systems such as Guardian, Noggin, OCA or ServiceNow.
  • Current Hazard Management Officer (HMO) and/or Conservation and Irrigation Officer (CIO) qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of Bush Fire Risk Management Plans and Fire Trail Plans across the diverse and dynamic Hunter region.
  • Oversee and coordinate the work of Area Risk Planning and Fire Trails Officers.
  • Collaborate with Area Mitigation teams.
  • Provide guidance and support to the broader team to ensure hazard reduction programs target the highest-risk areas and deliver meaningful community outcomes.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Translate complex risk information into practical and accessible advice.
  • Communicate effectively, influence outcomes, and foster relationships grounded in trust and respect.
