About The Position

The Per Diem O.R. Technician is an individual with knowledge and expertise in operating room technology. This employee is responsible for assisting in the performance of routine and delegated functions, under the direct supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required.
  • Prefer experience in operating room setting.
  • Certification in Operating Room Technology preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Courses in operating room technology, science, biology and chemistry preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform "scrub" assignment according to established guidelines, including applying principles of asepsis, performing surgical scrub, gowning and gloving, setting up sterile instrument tables, preparing supplies, assisting in draping, anticipating surgeon's needs, observing for emergencies, maintaining counts of sponges/needles/instruments, monitoring aseptic technique, assisting with specimens, dressings, drainage systems, and patient transfers, and discarding soiled materials and decontaminating equipment.
  • Assist the Registered Professional Nurse in performing circulating functions, including assembling supplies, providing special equipment, protecting the patient through positioning and aseptic practice, preparing the operative area, assisting with counts, completing operative count records, observing personnel and controlling traffic, caring for specimens, assisting with dressings and patient transfers, and assisting with room clean-up.
  • Assist the nurse in preparing medications or solutions to be administered during surgery, within specified limitations, including mixing solutions at the sterile field under direct supervision, labeling medications, showing medication labels, saving medication vials, announcing medication details, and not dispensing narcotics or controlled drugs.
  • Perform functions to assist in meeting operational needs, including assisting in patient transportation, notifying of changes in par levels or instrumentation, assisting in keeping operating room and storage areas organized, and updating preference cards.
