Assists perioperative nurses and anesthesia care providers with patient care and performs delegated patient care procedures in Surgical Services. Checks and restocks supplies; move medical equipment; may prepare equipment for use; and cleans and returns equipment to correct storage locations after use. Performs between case/end-of-case cleaning in the procedure rooms; performs anesthesia turnovers between patients and at end of schedule; and assists in maintaining a clean, safe environment. The OR Techs are responsible for setting up and turning over procedure rooms. During each turnover, they remove trash and soiled items from the room, wipe down all equipment and supplies, and set the room back up for the following procedure. They are responsible for moving and setting up the equipment needed for each case. The OR Techs are also responsible for stocking and setting up the gas machines and anesthesia area. When the patient gets to the room, OR Techs help transfer and position the patient. Depending on the procedure, they may need to "scrub in" wearing a sterile gown and gloves to help prep the patient for surgery, such as holding a broken leg while the RN and CST prep it for surgery. The OR Techs help with patient pick-up and transport as well. When a trauma patient needs to come to the OR from ECC, the OR tech help with the transport. They also assist the PA and CRNA transport open heart patients to CVICU. We also train them to use various equipment during a procedure. For instance, they may be assigned to a room with a Hana Table (surgical table) and help the surgeon move/manipulate the leg during a hip replacement procedure. OR Techs also run specimens to the lab/pathology and pick up units of blood and platelets needed during the day.
