Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; Associate's degree required.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse from the North Carolina State Board of Nursing or compact multi-state license.
  • BLS from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required upon hire.
  • Familiarity with instruments and equipment related to Perioperative Nursing.
  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity in handling instruments.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred.
  • ACLS & PALS from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) preferred; must obtain both certifications within 6 months of hire if certification(s) is/are currently not active.
  • CNOR Certification strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized nursing care to surgical patients, demonstrating extensive knowledge for various single and multi-system illnesses/injuries.
  • Control the surgical suite environment and coordinate a safe plan of care using standards of practice and hospital policies/procedures.
  • Demonstrate appropriate application of age-specific standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, including medication administration and care during altered states of consciousness.
  • Incorporate cultural and developmental needs into the plan of care in collaboration with the patient/family.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Maintain concentration on detailed requests despite interruptions and prioritize tasks to ensure patient safety.
  • Document patient care accurately in the patient record according to established standards.
  • Participate in and promote Universal Protocol and time out procedures for every procedure.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (surgeons, physician's assistants, anesthesia providers, SPD staff, Radiology, and other OR team members) to plan patient care and achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Act as a patient advocate, assess patient needs throughout the peri-operative experience, adjust the plan of care accordingly, and communicate changes to the team.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities, including collecting and analyzing data, and contributing to the development of patient care delivery systems, standards, policies, and procedures.
