The Operating Room Manager supervises all clinical and ancillary support personnel involved in Operating Rooms and Sterile Processing. This role works closely with the Director of Nursing and Administrator to establish policy and standards of nursing care and practice at the facility. The manager consults with the Medical Director regarding medical problems and communicates closely with the Scheduling Coordinator regarding approved procedures. They are responsible for interviewing candidates for all operative positions, making hiring or termination recommendations, and collaborating with the Director of Nursing and Safety Committee to develop and monitor orientation policies and procedures for competent staff. Additionally, the manager assists the Director of Nursing in arranging in-service programs, scheduling staff meetings, and providing adequate monitoring of qualified staff. They coordinate, assign, and/or provide relief coverage based on clinical area needs, and substantiate all overtime hours. Vacation and time off schedules are coordinated with approval from the Director of Nursing. The role monitors licensure of professional nursing personnel and CPR status, performs annual evaluations, and monitors job performance to confirm compliance with policies and personal protection. The manager ensures efficient flow of procedures by monitoring surgeon availability, on-time arrival, and informing surgeons of delays. They also monitor sterilization procedures for instruments and supplies, arrange maintenance and repair of medical equipment, and monitor efficient ordering of supplies, forwarding purchase requests for capital equipment. The manager schedules and conducts quarterly evacuation and fire drills, meets with manufacturer representatives regarding equipment updates and new products, and serves as a member of the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee to report complication data and infection control statistics. Finally, they assist the Director of Nursing in coordinating the employee injury/illness program and review variance reports, completing investigative documentation as appropriate. Communication with staff, peers, administration, physicians, patients, and families is expected to be open, direct, and honest.
