About The Position

The Operating Room Assistant (ORA) performs a variety of activities that provide support for the nursing staff within Surgical Services under the supervision of the Lead Nurse and professional nursing staff. The ORA participates as a member of the multidisciplinary surgical team to assist with operating room set-up, intraoperative patient care including retractor holding, and room turn-over to enable efficient use of operating room scheduling time in accordance with the Standards of Care at OrthoNebraska.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of employment.
  • 1+ year of clinical experience in accredited hospital with OR experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Uses communication skills to achieve the desired outcomes and is perceived as satisfying and acceptable by those involved promoting teamwork.
  • Promotes the team concept by demonstrating commitment and involvement among co-workers and other members of the health care professionals.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Any job offer will be contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical with a drug screen, background check and obtaining active licensures per job requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Uses aseptic technique when working in or around sterile field.
  • Assists circulating nurse with transporting and proper positioning of patients in the operating room.
  • Obtains/transports supplies, specimens, blood and lab work as directed by the circulator during surgical procedures.
  • Assists circulator with preparation of surgical site.
  • Performs between-case clean-up in operating room.
  • Maintains adequate stock of supplies to support daily operations in the surgical suites.
  • Sets high standards of performance for self and others.
  • Maintains a functional, safe and clean environment in the operating room.
  • Support quality and cost-effective care.
  • Maintains professional appearance, behavior and work environment.
  • Enhances personal and professional development.
  • Maintains anesthesia supply stock in anesthesia carts.
  • Comply with safety activities, policies and procedures and regulatory requirements such as OSHA and The Joint Commission.
  • Employee is responsible for all other duties as assigned for which competency has been demonstrated.
